Innovarcilla Materials Area works for / with companies in both comprehensive R & D + I projects and in the support and advice for the development of new materials, from the following range of technological services:

  • Design of materials and ceramic pastes based on previous specifications from the existing production process or functional and/or appearance requirements for the final product.
  • Material or energy recovery of industrial wastes and by-products in the ceramic sector.
  • Development of alkali activated materials according to applications.
  • Functional surface applications.
  • Development of materials for different applications according to the main shaping technologies.
  • Controlled porosity materials for filtration applications, functional supports (catalyst) or thermal insulation improvement.
  • Materials with high thermal inertia.

 

In addition to the subjects described above related to the design and development of new materials for different applications, Innovarcilla offers the following services related to materials characterization and laboratory analysis:

  • Physical characterization of materials:
    • Determination of real and apparent density of materials
    • Particle size analysis by X-ray absorption, by dry-sieving and by wet sieving
    • Determination of plasticity (Atterberg limits by the indentation methodology)
  • Mechanical characterization of consolidated materials:
    • Flexural, tensile and compressive strength, and abrasion.
  • Chemical characterization:
    • Chemical analysis.
    • Global Mineralogical analysis, identification of phyllosilicates, or quantitative analysis (Rietveld)
    • Leaching test (EN 12457-4)
    • Carbonates determination by calcimetry and determination of soluble sulphates, chlorides, fluorides and other elements present in the ceramic pieces or with an environmental interest
  • Characterization of solid fuels:
    • Determination of moisture content
    • Determination of Lower Calorific Value (LCV) and Higher Calorific Value (HCV)
    • Elemental analysis (C, H, S, N, Cl and O2), proximate analysis (ashes, non-burned, volatile and fixed carbon) or analysis of inorganic alkali and alkaline earth elements (Na2O, K2O, CaO, MgO)
    • Determination of free Alkali Index, Fouling Index or the ratio Cl / S
  • Thermal characterization:
    • Thermo-dilatometer test.
    • Determination of expansion coefficients of ceramic bodies and glazes.
    • Analysis of CO2, H2O, SOx, NOx, HF and HCl in gas emissions.
    • Thermal conductivity by THB (Transiet Hot Bridge) and heat flow meter (HFM)
    • Differential Scanning Calorimetry, DSC (-150 to 700 ºC) and specific heat determination.
    • Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and simultaneous thermal analysis (ATG-ATD). Reaction enthalpies and heats of reaction (ATG-HDSC)
  • Acoustic Characterization:
    • Sound absorption coefficient.
    • Sound transmission loss.
    • Dynamic modulus of elasticity.
  • Microstructural characterization and porosity:
    • Observation of samples in the optical and electron microscope (with possibility of microanalysis). Metallographic sample preparation and gold sputter coating.
    • Determination of open and closed porosity.
    • BET specific surface.
  • Ceramic Processing:
    • Preparation of samples for technological characterizations (reception humidity, crushing, dry or wet milling, ball milling, pendular mill, atomization)
    • Forming material by extrusion or pressing. Compaction diagram of ceramic powders at fixed humidity and three pressure values. Other methods of forming (slip casting)
    • Characterization of dry samples: working moisture (extrusion) or post-pressing expansion (pressing), drying shrinkage, Bigot curve (extrusion), cracking limits (extrusion), bulk density and flexural strength, tempering moisture and resistance loss during tempering.
    • Characterization of fired samples: Firing in electric or propane kiln (up to 1700 ° C), weight loss and linear firing shrinkage, bulk density, water absorption, mechanical strength, colour and chromaticity coordinates, evaluation of efflorescence and pyroplastic deformation.
